Search Engine Marketing (SEM) also known as pay per click advertising (PPC) marketing is when a company pays to have its advertisement show on the results page of a search engine in the sponsored links section (at the top and right of the page) when people search for key-phrases deemed relevant to a company. Each click the advertisement receives incurs a cost to the company (cost per click or cpc). The cost per click is a function of the competition for the key-phrase in question. A click from the key-phrase “dog walking service” will cost a fraction of the price of a click for “mortgage broker” as the latter has far more competition. Why did we start this division?
We had no intention of ever offering PPC/SEM consultancy. However, in our role as SEO consultants to clients, we were genuinely dismayed at how much money our clients were unwittingly wasting on PPC. They were receiving thousands of clicks (each one costing money) for key-phrases that were never going to convert into sales and what was even more concerning was that many of our clients weren’t even aware of the terms that people had actually searched for before clicking on their ad’. Furthermore, unnecessarily low quality scores meant clients were paying many multiples of what they needed to spend for each click. As a result, we set up our SEM/PPC division to ensure that our clients no longer wasted any money on loose clicks and those clicks that they did pay cost as little as possible.
