Google+ is Google's social network which was meant to rival the likes of Facebook. While uptake has not been as fast or as high as some of its rivals, it still has its benefits. The main difference with Google+ and the other social networking platforms is that there is no advertising on here which might be a major plus for those that get annoyed by targeting on Facebook and Twitter etc. Google+ functionality allows for both individual and business pages which is also similar to Facebook.
Google+ provides you with another place to share your posts and thus extend their reach. This in turn could have a positive effect on website traffic and inevitably organic ranks.
"Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content without such verification, which will result in most users naturally clicking on the top (verified) results. The true cost of remaining anonymous, then, might be irrelevance."
- Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO and current chairman.
Former Google CEO and current chairman, Eric Schmidt, was quoted as saying the above in terms of what is referred to as "anonymous content" which is content not attributed to any personin particular.
If websites identify the author, this is known as Google Authorship. Previously this also allowed for profile pictures to show up in the SERP but Google halted this in recent times but Author Rank continues to be important and relevant.
Google My Business replaced Google+ Local which in turn replaced the original Google Places. It is still a really important part of any local SEO strategy. Old Google Places listings should be migrated to Google My Business listings. They can post updates for followers including blogs, links to other items of interest and users can follow the page.
